“How and why Air pollution is bad for humans”

“The Global Burden of Disease Study” by Christopher J.L has described “the worldwide im- pact of air pollution with as many as 3.1 million of 52.8 million all cause and all age deaths be- ing attributable to ambient air pollution in the year 2010”. Air pollution is a mixture of solid particles and gases in the air such as car emissions, chemicals from factories and dust. Ozone gas is another major cause of air pollution. When ozone forms air pollution, it is also called smog. Some air pollutants are poisonous for humans and can cause many diseases in the human body such as lung cancer, heart disease and stroke. Some researcher and scientists believe that air pol- lution is good for the growth of plants and that it also slows climate change. On the other hand, many scientists believe that air pollution is bad for human health because it causes heart, eye and throat diseases. Because it causes these illnesses ,a secondary result of air pollution is that it causes students to miss school and workers to miss work, which is bad for our education system and our economy and should be remedied by the government.

The article from the CCNY database JSTOR “Air Pollution As a Socio Envi- ronmental Health Problem a survey report ” by Nahum Z. Medallia talks about why air pollu- tion is bad for human health.

According to “Medallia, N. (1964)”National Goals in Air Pollution Research,” the Sur- geon General’s Ad Hoc Task Group on Air Pollution Research Goals states: “The aspects of air

pollution which are most apparent and of greatest personal concern to the individual probably are irritation to the eyes, nose, and throat, malodors, and the reduction of visibility and heart disease. The pollutants responsible for these effects are undesirable whether or not they cause long-range health effects or economic losses, because they constitute an annoyance to people” (p. 154).

This statement shows that air pollution is bad for living organism it can cause many dis- eases such as diseases of eye, nose and throat. Heart failure is a public issue .Air pollution con- tain certain chemicals which are bad for human heart and cause cardiovascular diseases.

The another article “Does pollution increase school absences?” by Janet Currie, Eric A. Hanushek, E. Megan Kahn, Matthew Neidell, and Steven G. Rivkin. The article is about air pol- lution is bad because it is a cause of absence of students in school. It causes disease of asthma and other breathing problems.

According to Currie, J., Hanushek, E., Khan, E., Neidell, M., & Rivkin, S.(2009) “Air pol- lution is a possible cause of school absence for some children. Children with respiratory prob- lems such as asthma could be absent because the pollution provokes an attack or because parents keep the child home in order to avoid pollution exposure. While absences are of interest in their own right, epidemiologists focus on absences as a possibly more sensitive proxy for health status than alter native measures such as emergency room visits or hospital admissions. Children are particularly sensitive to pollution given their small size, high metabolic rates, and developing systems, making it important to have measures of the effects of pollution that capture its impact on the ability of children to perform their daily activities (p. 682).

I agree with the point that air pollution is the cause of school students absence because some people have different allergies due to air pollution such as asthma and pollen. So when students sick parents do not let their kids to go to school. I remember in my childhood my one of my cousin she has asthma due to air pollution. when is feeling more sick her parents does not let her go to school .Overall it shows that air pollution causes serious health issue lots of absence in school which is bad for student education career and future.

The article “South African air pollution control legislation” by M Andre Raie is about air pollu- tion is bad because it is not good for humans. So government create laws to investigate compa- nies and factories to check and control air pollution .

According to Rabie, M. (1973) “The first statute to deal with air pollution control is the Public Health Act 36 of 1919. This act classifies air pollution as a legislation statutory nuisance, to be dealt with by local authorities. Enforcement is by way of notice of abatement, supported by criminal sanctions. Enforcement has been rendered difficult since proof that a particular factory or chimney caused the air pollution complained of and that, moreover, this pollution is injurious or dangerous to health, is often very difficult to obtain. At any rate air pollution control cannot be achieved only on the basis of prosecutions for nuisance” (p. 65).

Government create laws against people who used illegal air pollution. The reason being that is very dangerous for the health. People who use illegal air pollution should be punished.

Clearly ,air pollution is bad for human health. It cause disease of heart, breathing, and other health issues. Due to sickness students, don’t go to school and prepare for their future a sec-

ondary result of air pollution is that it causes students to miss school and workers to miss work, which is bad for our education system and our economy and should be remedied by the government.
